Best.Job.Ever. Hands down. Nice people, interesting work, great projects, great boss (who I will be forever indebted to for teaching me all the ins and outs of photoshop and illustrator — and who I know I annoyed senseless with my useless work ethic – sorry Scott), good hours and great coffee and sushi.
I had to do a lot of posters and as you can see, I employed my very early grasp of computer illustration to these projects.

I decided to include this as my contribution to The Friday Archives* this week as I have been looking at charts a lot in the last couple of weeks – particularly those amazing vintage charts from India showing you how to be An Ideal Boy
. I am working on a bunch of charts – not sure how they are going to work yet but I love the format.
*If you’re taking part in The Friday Archives (publish some of your old work, whatever that might be) then please leave a comment so we can come and visit!

Back to 1995 – and back to my printmaking sketchbook from that year again for this week’s Friday Archives.

I was obsessed with houses in 1995 – it was the year I moved out of home and my friends and I trawled through open inspection after open inspection looking for the perfect, affordable rental home. We saw some incredible places, places you wouldn’t wish on your worst enemy – but we ended up moving into quite a nice place – an old 1800s double story shop on a bustling main road. It had just previously been a “massage parlour” called Golden 111 so we had some interesting gentlemen attempting to get in the front door in the first couple of months.
So my printing making folio that year was full of Melbourne’s inner city architecture; terrace houses and quaint boom-time worker’s cottages. These images were carved from lino and then printed with artist’s pigmented inks which ran and blurred in a way I really liked. It was different from printing with the sticky printer’s ink and gave me a way to print at home and also get unexpected and sometimes beautifully spontaneous images. I love the colours in this image. Reminds me of patchwork.
Are you playing along this week? (It’s as simple as posting some of your past work – be it art, craft, writing, photography or anything really – to your blog). If so please leave me a comment!

Well! What a few days. We’ve been in hospital for a couple with dear little Lily who has been sick (again) with a virus which developed into a nasty case of asthma. She is home now and doing much better, but I can not tell you how much this kind of experience makes you take a little step back and make more time for children schmooching. I’m sure you can imagine.

I was fully intending to go over to my Mum and Dad’s this week and dig out some really old stuff for my Friday Archives* selection for today but that never happened. Instead I am republishing my first ever little softies from 2002. They are still knocking around the house somewhere, and considering they were made from synthetic felt (I had yet to discover the joys of wool felt) they have lasted well.
And also – there is an interview with me up at Plush You… slightly garbled because I sent it off the morning we went in to hospital with a slightly “that will have to do!” attitude. Thanks for having me Plush You. Kristen used some samples of my work which made me realise how long ago it has been since I have actually made any softies.
And because it’s all about softies today – check out the Softies for Mirabel Project — I am about to start doodling ideas for my contribution.
*Friday Archives — every Friday I am posting some old work of mine – art, craft, photography, writing… whatever takes my fancy. Others are playing along. If you are interested, join in the fun! Feel free to nab the button above, leave a comment, or just a link. It’s wonderful to dig up dusty old stuff from the past and realise how it might still influence you today.

Welcome to the second Friday Archives! In case you missed last week — I have started this thing where every Friday I post some work (illustration, art work, craft, writing) from my past and I invite you to play along. This week I’ve even made a button. You can find it below.
This is an excerpt from a two page comic I drew in 1997. For the whole story you can click on the above links for two pages of angsty, autobiographical comic badness. I drew it all by hand! Those were the days. I wouldn’t dare any more. A lot of liquid paper was used.
Here’s the button:

Feel free to copy it into your site and link it back to loobylu.com
It’s meme-city around here. I am LOVING yesterday’s celebrity sightings!

Hello! I am starting a new thing (meme?) here. I am calling it “The Friday Archives”. Feel free to join in!
I have been digging around in my old sketchbooks and discovering recurring themes in my work and I am thinking that every Friday I might post a picture of some art work from ye-olde-days (university, high school, TAFE, primary school etc). I thought if I called it “Friday Archives” it’s pretty open, so apart from old art, photography and craft work, even a poem, short story or some 21 Jump Street inspired Fan Fiction (lawd help us!) might even fit the bill. (If a meme like this already exists, please let me know).
This is my first piece – from 1994. I was doing my first year of Art Teaching Education at Melbourne Uni and was loving printmaking class. I was already using a computer (corel draw from memory) to come up with designs and when I wasn’t playing on the computer I was burning the images into steel plates with acid. This is an artist’s proof of an etching of my Grandmother and her siblings when they were young. I think my Grandma must be the one on the right. They are all looking at the little blonde girl – who was the sister who died when she was just a girl. This ghostly, fabled little sister has always fascinated me.
If you decide to join in the fun – please leave a link in my comments!
