Bathroom wall #2
Here is our second Bathroom Wall Exhibition. Sweet girls this week.
First on the wall this week is a postcard I brought back from Vancouver in 1998. This is one of my absolutely favourite cards in my collection. It’s a photo of a detail from the beautiful The Spirit of Haida Gwaii, The Jade Canoe, a sculpture by Bill Reid. “The Mouse Woman, the third woman aboard this canoe, is the oldest and most enigmatic of all: Grandmother to the Raven, she unravels the tangled webs inhibiting the activities of the creatures of the myth time.” It’s in the Vancouver International Airport. I love the little face of this grandmother mouse – so Tove Jansson-esque. The stories about the Mouse Woman sound like they might be a little Tove Jansson-esque also.
Next up is a Camilla Engman print/collage – sweet little girl with a fish scale dress. And next is one for the little people;
Flora and Rosebud from the Wee folk Studio by Salley Mavor.
Lastly, is Sleepless Night (sitting), 1997 by my favourite Yoshimoto Nara, which was sent to me by Isabelle some years ago.

Our bathroom has naught but an empty picture hook and a few cobwebs. How plain … it must be time remedy this!

I’ve got photos of the local geography by a Vancouver photographer in an IKEA frame. Not too fancy, but it gets the job done!

If you like Mouse Woman (I do too!), you will like the stories of Christie Harris who lived amongst the Haida and Tsiampsian and gathered their legends. She retells them beautifully – she tried to capture the feel of the oral tradition and she really does! Specifically, the ones about Mouse Woman are “Mouse Woman and the Vanished Pricesses” and “Mouse Woman and the vanished Princes”.

I have a print of a nudie Pears girl hopping back into the bath;her dolly patiently waiting for her next to the tap.The slogan says “I’d forgotten my Pears!”.After 16 years it is looking decidedly shabby and quite cobwebby.I can’t bring myself to take it down though.My daughter ,when she was a cherubic faced toddler, used to be fascinated with it at her bathtime because she thought the girl in the picture was her(same hairdo,same bodyshape!)She is now 14 and cringes everytime I remind her.

on our wall is the 2009 astrological calendar and moon planting guide. somehow i feel happier knowing what the moon and planets are doing up there.

Did you manage to see the actual statue in the Vancouver Airport? It is spectacular. I may be a little biased, but I think YVR is one of the most wonderful airports I have gone through.

I got nadda. Zilch. There was a mosaic tile precariously balanced on the windowsill, but one of my inquisitive cats remedied that. I like to think our bathroom has enough character that it doesn’t need adding to. That’s what I’ll keep telling myself, anyway!

We have a big Escher poster taped to the back of the door – the one with the waterfall that falls down despite it actually only being on one floor, if that makes any sense at all, heh.
I also have a really old “Guide to the the finger alphabet” I found at my grandma’s house – so we’ve all learned the sign language alphabet, which hopefully hasn’t change that much in the last fifty years!

I have Brian Andreas’ Story People in my bathroom (www.storypeople.com). My favourite among them all is “Yellow Buttons”
“She told me once that the year she went to England she painted all her buttons yellow so she would remember what the sun felt like.”
They are bright and cheerful even in the deep Ottawa winters!

Oh Yoshitomo Nara! two books of his works that sit on my shelf are my big favourites! awesome idea of your bathroom gallery, so quaint and cool. I will have to do it one day when I am no longer renting.

We have a really bad pic of the Titanic. It’s been cut out of a magazine and mounted on wood with a thick layer of varnish. Why anyone would do that is beyond me! But it has moved from bathroom to bathroom for the past 5 years and it wouldn’t be home without it!
