Everyone loves a Give Away #1

** Update to say comments are closed and I will be drawing a winner as soon as Lily has her afternoon nap! **
I have just finished putting together a package for a fellow blogger whose work I really appreciate and who has been a big influence for me in the past month or so – she has made me feel all inspired again. And as I was putting it together I thought, you know who I also really appreciate? It’s the people who come and visit my blog, and who sometimes leave kind and supportive comments and the people who send me nice emails and the people who just visit and read what I have to rave on about at any given time. Well, that means YOU. So thank you. I really appreciate what this blog has given me over the years, so I thought I would have a series of give aways as a very small token of my enormous gratitude. I’m starting small so as not to set the bar too high; this week I am giving away a bundle of fabric and trim – bits of Japanese prints, novelty reproduction pieces and a nice piece of Kaffe Fassett as well as a copy of the book I illustrated for Klutz.
All you need to do to play is leave a comment between now and this Friday 12 noon Australian EST after which I will use the very funky random number generator to pick a recipient. Rather than just saying “pick me!”, please leave me a link to your favourite internet recipe. (Mine is Princess Meg’s Birthday Celebration Cookies, from Loobylu c. 1999. Yours doesn’t have to so gratuitously self-referential if you don’t want it to be!). Feel free to use tinyurl if the link is enormous.
Please make sure you include your email address in the comment information so I can email the lucky winner for a postage address.
10 days lying around in bed got me all sentimental about the important things in my life, and there’s no getting away from the fact that this blog is one of those things. xx

Everyone *does* love a giveaway, and a Loobylu giveaway in particular!
I’m kind of cheating with the recipe, I had to have a bit of a search to find it on the internet, when I usually just use the recipe book. It’s the best salad ever, and the photo on this site doesn’t do it justice.

Wonderful things blogs ![]()
I just made the baked ricotta cake from my local italian cheesemaking shop Paesanella. (BTW The recipe isn’t quite complete. I added 3 egg yolks to the filling where it says add eggs.)
Here’s the link:

(I made it plain, without the chocolate and cherries)
It was great.

I have a partner who won’t eat mushrooms … so I just love preparing mushroom recipes when I have the opportunity (which isn’t that often).
Try Jamie Oliver’s wild mushroom papardelle.
Delicious!
Glad you’re feeling better.

Yay for being up and out of bed!
I have been making this spiced pumpkin bread quite often lately. I half the sugar, use whole wheat flour, and add chopped pecans. It’s really good

Even if you don’t pick me (pick me!), I’d love to share this recipe for Mexican tea cookies (aka pecan sandies) with you. I’ve made them a bunch of times now, and they always come out beautifully. They’re addictive, too!

ooooh purdy japanese prints and trims! just what i’ve been trawling the web for this morning! Christina’s flickr of beautiful prints this morning had me dreaming of sewing and the summer dresses i’ve been buying at bargain basement places in the city have me wishing i could sew a zillion pretty dresses for summer (for me and my blythes!) fortunately i’m not a cook and couldn’t pick a recipe to save myself so i consider myself unfortunately OUT OF THE RUNNING. i love the colour and life your blog brings my friends page.

My ice cream pumpkin pie – Delicious!
It is SO GOOD. Honestly, I could eat pumpkin pie, ice cream, and lasagne for the rest of my life and be quite content. Combining two of those dishes = heaven. Plus, let’s be quite honest – ice cream + lasagne is probably vulgar.

You have been an inspiration to me, Claire
I’m not one to comment often on blogs but I’ve been meaning to mention something to you. Remember when you were chatting bits about being interested in travelling more… specifically driving across Canada? We did that last fall for five weeks and it was such a beautiful adventure. I have so many great memories from that trip.
If you ever want to chat about it, interested in recommendations or see the pictures I’d be happy to share & talk your ear off
hugs to you,

although it’s not a recipe, i love to browse flickr for some beautiful cakes:
http://flickr.com/search/?q=fondant+cakes
for quick fondant [besides buying it at the store], just melt a 16 oz. bag of marshmallows in the microwave, stirring it every 30 seconds. then work some powdered sugar in until you get your desired texture. the less you use, the more shiny it would look. the more you use, the more softer it will appear. also, don’t forget to grease your counter and hands [with vegetable shortening] before working in the sugar as it gets really sticky!

Claire,
You don’t need to include me as I don’t really have a favourite recipe link to share, but I did want to say WOW on the Klutz book. Now that you mention it’s your illustrations it seems so obvious. I wanted to mention how much pleasure we got from that book. We bought Ella a copy of it for our family holiday last year and she still plays with the letters, many of which she made for us!

My favourite recipe is Chocolate Dream Bars. But my secret twist on this recipe is to freeze the bars after they cool – it makes the brown sugar caramelize in a most delightful way! And I usually mix a little peanut butter in the middle layer (provided I’m making it for people who are not allergic).
I really like the dollhouse and stove in your girls’ room from your previous post. Where did you get them from?
Thank you for all your inspiring posts!

Claire,
thank you for your blog.
This is among my favorite recipes.
http://www.irishsecrets.ie/recipe-secrets/irish-stew.php
This is good honest food. Its easy and quick to prepare, which counts for everything, if like me you are at home with a 3 & 1/2 year old a 2 year old and a 4 month old! Its not really summer time grub, but you can always trust Melbourne to give you a good stew day in November, before it gets mental hot.
I make it a lunch time and leave it cook for four or five hours, and I usually add a few carrots. Sorry all the imperial measurements.

My current favorite is pineapple upside down pumpkin gingerbread. Here’s the link: http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/Pineapple-Upside-Down-Pumpkin-Gingerbread-350121
It has a lot going on, but it’s SO good. I make it in a 9 x 13 pan instead of 9-inch square (I can’t imagine how all the batter would fit in the smaller pan) and I also add chopped crystallized ginger to the batter. YUM!
As one of my friends said when I took this cake to a party this weekend, it tastes exactly like fall should taste!

I am glad you’re feeling better! I’m excited to go through all of your readers suggestions too… so many of them sound so good.
My favorite is a simple banana bread… because we always have extra brown bananas around that no one wants to eat. The recipe is from James Beard’s Beard on Bread, but I’ve modified is some. Here’s my version:
Banana Bread
makes one loaf
2 cups sifted all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup butter
1 cup brown sugar
2 eggs
1 cup mashed, very ripe bananas (the recipe calls for 2, but if I have 3 bananas I put them all in)
1/3 cup milk
1 teaspoon lemon juice or vinegar
Sift the flour with the soda and salt. Cream the butter and gradually add the sugar. Mix well. Add the eggs and bananas and blend thoroughly. Combine the milk and lemon juice, which will curdle a bit. Slowly and alternately fold in the flour mixture, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Blend well after each addition. Pour the batter into a lavishly buttered (I have a non-stick loaf pan so I don’t use any butter) 9x5x3 inch pan and bake in a preheated 350 oven for 1 hour, or until the bread springs back when lightly touched in the center.
Here’s a link to the original: http://untotheuttermost.blogspot.com/2006/12/banana-bread.html

Just five minutes ago I was thinking about this recipe http://www.pieknits.com/blog/2008/04/saffron_cookies.html
I saved it ages ago but haven’t yet gotten around to making them, I just think the idea of having saffron in a biscuit is so decadent (and sunny)
I also have this great recipe for a rhubarb and blueberry crumble that I love because there is no sugar in the rhubarb bit (just stuff like blueberries, grape juice and orange zest). But I have no idea where I got it from, somewhere online because I’ve copied it into a word doc…. anyone know where I found it?

so thanks for letting people into your life!

My current fave on the web is a baked sweet potato custard that i make for my family, but 5yo in particular who does not eat any fruits or veggies. it is sweet potatoes and bananas and some raisins – very healthy, low sugar and she eats 2 bowls of it! I had to make a quadruple batch this weekend as last weekend’s double batch was gone in 2-3 days!

Oh, yippee! Love giveaways and LOVE sharing this recipe, Cinnamon-Apple Cake, from Cooking Light magazine:
http://recipes.epicurean.com/recipe/21786/cinnamon-apple-cake.html
When I worked on a home and garden TV show a few years back, we had a guest who said this cake brought her good luck every time she made it: it got her an apartment, a fiance, a job…
… it’s just brought me rave reviews and people stuffing their faces and then begging for the recipe, but who needs more than that? I already have those other things, and this is the only thing people beg me for… It’s so, so delicious.
Glad you are feeling better and I am still glad you brought your blog back. It was one of the first art/craft/illustration blogs I discovered way back, so very long ago, in like 2006.

(If you love olives, both green and black, you will LOVE this. If you do not love olives, chances are you will still love it. I put that theory to a test at a recent dinner party and it was repeatedly proved to be correct.)

My favourite internet recipe is probably vanilla cupcakes with buttercream icing. Mmmmmm! Simple, but tasty, especially if you add real vanilla bean seeds into the mix

My favourite recipe has to be the rich chocolate cake that I found one day on a packet of cocoa. It became our standard birthday cake recipe for may years and it’s amazing with far too much butter cream icing
It also becomes more and more moist if it’s not all eaten in one day
21st October 2008 at 6:08 pm
is it healthy? no.
is it easy for kids to make? yes!
It is Chocolate Tiffin.

Hi, Thought I’d send you a link to our favourite recipe for a special occasion. Mushroom Wellington from the “Cranks Bible”
veggie cookbook.
It’s perfect for a veggie Christmas with roast veg. Delicious I promise and we use frozen puff pastry so it is easier to prepare. The recipe makes Loads, so if you wanted to feed 4-6 half the recipe is ample. Hope you give it a try.

sorry if that’s too long – couldn’t get the tinyurl thingy to work. I love these lentil and cheese wedges and, more importantly, so does my little boy! You can grate in some carrot or courgette or any other veggies and either stick them in a loaf/cake tin or shape individual patties and they are a meal in one, great on-the-go food.
I loyally follow your blog and checked back regularly while you were on hiatus to see if you were back. Your creativity inspires me! Glad I finally got around to posting and saying that, even if I was lured in by free goodies

Hello!
This recipe is officially for banana bread but I use it to cook the most excellent banana muffins. They can be made sugar free by substituting a few handfuls of chopped-up dates instead of sugar.
Recipe makes six muffins – I usually double it to fill a 12-hole muffin tray.

It is hard to pick just one but this recipe is really good and really easy.

Hi Claire -
How fun! I’ve already found some amazing recipes by clicking randomly on people’s links.
Mine is as follows… I’ve also listed the ingredients and recipe, just in case the link doesn’t work for everyone. (You may need to be a Wagamama member). ENJOY – it’s utterly scrumptious! xxx
*lemongrass and chilli creme caramel*
http://www.wagamama.com/members/page/NDg=
Introducing rice to crème brulée may seem like a sacrilege to some yet the inherent creaminess of the rice works wonders both for flavour and texture. you can play around with other rices too, italian arborio produces a richer, more rounded result and basmati has its fans
you will need
200ml (7fl oz) milk
2 lemongrass stalks, outer leaves removed, slightly bashed
1 dried red chilli
2 tablespoons sake
1 cinnamon stick
1 star anise
50g (2oz) white sugar
1 egg and 2 yolks
2 x 150ml (¼ pint) ramekin dishes for the caramel
4 tablespoons water
50g (2oz) white sugar
instructions
put the milk, lemongrass, chilli, sake, cinnamon stick and star anise in a pan and place over a low heat for 15 minutes, without letting it come to the boil. turn off the heat and leave to infuse
preheat the oven to 150°c/300°f/gas 2. first prepare the caramel. put the water and the sugar in a small pan over a very low heat, without boiling, until dissolved. turn up the heat and boil until golden. carefully pour into the bottom of the ramekins
whisk the sugar, egg and yolks in a mixing bowl until light. strain the unfused milk on to the eggs, mix well and pour over the caramel. place the ramekins in a roasting tray on the middle of the shelf of the oven and fill the tray with enough boiling water to reach halfway up the sides of the ramekins. bake for 40-45 minutes until set, with a slight wobble, but not coloured. allow to cool completely in the roasting tray. turn out on to 2 plates and serve

Hi Claire,
I knew those illustrations looked familiar when I bought that book. I actually bought it as a gift for my daughter’s little friend as we have just moved interstate and it was a ggodbye gift. I really wanted to get one for my daughter as well, but they only had one in the shop. So, obviously I would love to get my hands on another one so she can send letters and cards to all her little friends back in Sydney.
Here is a recipe that I have bookmarked

oh me oh my I dont cook so dont have any fave recipes, please dont blame me its just I was raised by a domestic goddess and I vowed never to be a mans slave…..
this included cooking and cleaning, sewing and darning socks
I took wood work instead of home ec and shunned all things womanly
It hasnt served me well nor my two lil children who only get home cooked meals at ‘daddies’ house
I did however learn to sew….does that redeem me?
if not, I do have ‘that’ book, I bought it for my son to encourage his writing skills
as he really doesnt appreciate drawing/writing
its a fabulous book
would love another copy to give to my nephew as a pressie
ok so after that essay lets hope the magic number generator pics moi hahaha

ohmigoodness! I love the Japanese prints so much! Thanks for having this wonderful giveaway!
As for the recipe… I’m partial towards recipes which are fast and easy to whip up. I have an excuse – I am a student =P and have little time to fit books, crafting AND cooking (so cooking is not priority, although snacking is). Hehe. So here’s my favourite: http://www.taste.co.nz/home/recipedetail.aspx?ArticleID=3051
It’s simple, fast and yummy-licious. =)

My favourite recipe is for Sun-Sparkle cheesecake. My friend and I call it Tina Sparkles’ cheesecake (after Strictly Ballroom) and both our mothers made it in the 70s.

This is a great recipe for “French bread”. Short and sweet, but with such wonderful results. I use all unbleached white bread flour. So naughty! Here is the link. I love reading your blog, I rarely have time in my busy life to keep up with my own, and it rarely does what I want it to do. I am a mother and a crafter, therefore I am.

It’s just starting to cool off a bit here in San Diego, and I’ve managed to catch a cold, so I made a nice batch of stew yesterday. I loosely followed a recipe in the Joy of Cooking, but this one I found online looks very similar to what I did: http://fortheloveofcooking-recipes.blogspot.com/2008/09/beef-stew.html
Quite tasty, if I do say so myself!

I think that my favorite recipe from the grand ol’ internets is 1-2-3 Peanut Butter Cookies – it is easy and makes a tasty sweet for people who can’t tolerate gluten!
23rd October 2008 at 2:35 am
I was so glad to see you return after your hiatus! I wish that I had a recipe to link tofor my favorite dish! It is actually my family’s favorite dish.
Tater tot hot-dish (casserole, but “hot-dish” is a Minnesota word!)
1 pound of ground beef (or turkey) with a finely chopped onion. browned well
1 can of cream of mushroom soup 1/2 a can of water.
Stir together and pour into a baking dish and top with frozen tater tots.
Bake at about 400 degrees F for 45 – 60 minutes or until the tater tots are golden brown.
Easy, but always a hit at the Biggs house.

I don’t have a link, but my favorite thing to do right now is slice an acorn squash in half, scoop out the seeds and fill it with a mixture of chopped apples, golden raisins, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and a drizzle of honey. Bake in a dish with some water at 350 degrees until the squash flesh is soft but not too dry. It’s like eating pumpkin pie for dinner! I pair it with a nice salad. Yum!

Hi! And thank-YOU for all the years of reading and inspiration you’ve given me!
I couldn’t possibly pick an absolute favourite, but this recipe for wholemeal banana bread is being made at least once a week in our house at the moment. Where the recipe says vanilla yoghurt I just substitute whatever natural yoghurt we have in the fridge at the time. Which usually is a natural yoghurt mixed with passionfruit, which makes the bread extra-yummy!
What a great idea! I’m going to browse your comments for recipes!

Love that Klutz book you did — I bought six of them earlier this year for my daughters to give as gifts at the many birthday parties they’re invited to. Now our store is sold out of them, and I’ll be elated to get another copy!

I read your entry, thought about which recipe to post and by the time I’d returned you’d practically gathered a recipe book! Like many others, i’m a long term reader, grateful for the inspirational blog and unable to resist the possibility of peeking at such a pretty package as you’ve compiled…
Here’s a thoroughly trustable, emphatically brilliant recipe, that chances are you already know:

I’ve used this recipe for poached eggs over rice & greens quite a bit –

Not exactly a festive sweet treat (I go back to my childhood cookbook – or Nigella – for most of those) but a hearty vegetarian meal.

Now that I finally made a trip to the post office and posted a wee package to Australia today; I feel I can comment and leave my two cents for ya.
This recipe and the book it came from has saved my life!
It’s a big hit with everyone and the cupcakes are so tasty no one misses the dairy at all!!! I make a batch and stick them in the freezer (without frosting) and whenever I need to bring my kiddo a treat at a friend’s dairy filled birthday party, I can easily defrost a couple and make a quick frosting and off we go!

With a glut of courgettes you can’t beat this recipe, I originally found it on a self sufficiency blog but this is the same recipe:

Add all ingredients bar the cream and freeze bucket loads to get you through the dark months.
Thanks too for all the inspiration you continue to give. You may remember I emailed you post my m/c after you gave birth to Amelia and you sent a lovely reply? Your blog enabled me to cope with babies at such a sad time. Well now i have 4, yes 4 boys. All born within 40 months and ending up with identical twins. I feel I’ve taken a journey that I didnt expect and has been really tough, but your blog has been a kind of parallel journey which i really appreciate. Glad you are on the mend. Sorry to blurt.

THis one is a take on the NY Cheesecake.
this recipe is interesting because there are rather scientific cheesecake questions and explanations in the comments.
My little tip would be to add heaps more lemon zest and a little orange zest too. Also substitute a bit of the cream cheese for sour cream and even add in a little cooked potato for a more Eastern Euro vibe. Plus vanilla. Add lots of vanilla essence.

I’ve followed you off and on for years, always amazed at your creative talent, as I can barely thread a needle.
This recipe is good with either chicken or turkey cutlets (if your store carries them) and I usually leave out the flat leaf parsley. But it’s delicious:

I am so happy to hear that you are feeling better. Pneumonia really is a nasty illness. I have been enjoying your blog for years. My favorite online recipe is the Nigella Lawson “Clementine Cake” I’ve made it several times to rave reviews from friends and family
