The Boss of You – Give away!

Lauren Bacon and Emira Mears, authors of the inspiring The Boss of You, which I raved about the week before last, are very kindly offering a Loobylu reader a copy of their book. I am still loving the book and can’t recommend it highly enough.
So … what I would like you to do:
One of my favourite exercises in the book for helping to establish a feeling for the kind of business you are creating was to define the “personality” of you business (p. 31). The idea is the pretend that your business is a person and write a profile which describes this person… what it might wear, where it likes to hang out and so on. All I want you to do to be in the running for this book is to leave a comment with a description of a meal which would reflect your business’s (or a business you would like to create) personality. Mine is a warm croissant with butter on a cute slightly chipped vintage plate alongside a mug of warm milky coffee. Not exactly surprising but it works for me.
So leave me a comment! And I will write down all the numbers of the comments about meals on bits of paper and Lily will draw one out of a hat. Good luck!
** edited to add that comments will close in just over 24 hours – that’s tomorrow – Wednesday 21st May, 2008, 1pm Australian EST **
Comment are now closed! Thank you!

Howdy. My business would enjoy sitting down to a delicious toasted jarlsberg cheese sandwich with the cheese oozing out the side on the melamine plate made by my ginger haired son at kinder with a slightly naughty vanilla latte nestled alongside. And maybe a chocolate royal to finish.

Oh so easy, Sitting with a friend outside with a warm breeze floating by sharing a rustic platter of crunch doughy bread, with wonderful blue cheeses and yummy fruit with a side of olive oil for dipping and a lovely glass of red wine. Of course there are sweet peas at the table and we are laughing and laughing.

A great big bowl of pumpkin soup, with warm from the oven crusty bread on the side.
20th May 2008 at 12:45 pm

20th May 2008 at 1:07 pm
My business would probably be a a banana milkshake with banana & cinnamon pancakes. Simple things
20th May 2008 at 1:11 pm
Mine is a steaming mug of hot chocolate, so thick and rich it almost needs a spoon… this is consumed beneath a cozy lambswool blanket with a fantastic book. Oh yeah – and its raining outside and two cats are keeping me warm too – perfect!!
20th May 2008 at 1:13 pm
Mine would be a warm slice of Homemade Lasagne with Bechamel Sauce. All those layers with different tastes and textures and when they come together…mmmmm…oh yeah…mmm.
20th May 2008 at 1:20 pm
My business loves to eat party food – it isn’t healthy but it’s fun!
Little sausage rolls, gingerbread men, fairy bread and birthday cake with chocolate icing.
Perhaps this is why I (not my business) is putting on weight. Oops.
20th May 2008 at 1:29 pm
Mac ‘n Cheese with a side of chicken fingers. With a soda pop to drink and NO VEGETABLES! (If you think my business venture might cater to little boys, you’d be right!)
20th May 2008 at 1:44 pm
Hello to all! I would venture to say that my business would be a combination between:
1. A campfire on a starlit night – no bugs! – with a box of graham crackers, chocolate bars, a bag of marshmellows all surrounded by children showing their parents how to assemble the best S’Mores in the world
*yummy*
&
2. A lovely stroll in a peaceful wood where a gently rolling creek begs for you to drink from it’s cool waters.
Good luck to everyone!
20th May 2008 at 1:56 pm
Yum. It’s a lovely springtime dessert of green tea ice cream mochi served on Bunnykins plates and shared by two elderly ladies who turn into giggling little girls when in each other’s presence. They’re seated at a dainty wrought-iron table on a stony patio overlooking the seaside. While they eat, little black kitties rub against their legs and wait for a snack of fresh salmon.
20th May 2008 at 2:03 pm
My meal would be shepherds pie with lots of fresh cooked vegetables, and apple crumble and custard – all home made, home grown, reminiscent of grandma’s kitchen – good healthy food for the hole family. Comfort food.
20th May 2008 at 2:04 pm
Oh how neat!
My business would be a ceramic green bowl full of fresh blueberries and raspberries. Sitting next to this on a fancy doily would be two round chocolate chip cookies with vanilla ice cream sandwiched inbetween and then rolled in chocolate chips.
20th May 2008 at 2:13 pm
My business would be two slices of warm french toast with maple syrup and strawberries, and a really large, round mug of flat white, the sort of mug that you have to cup with two hands.
20th May 2008 at 2:17 pm
Mine would be homemade mac and cheese (from scratch with gruyere cheese), hearty bread and a salad made with spring greens and asian pear slices. All served on Anthropologie dinnerware. For dessert, it would have to be chocolate cupcakes with raspberries and fresh whipped cream and Earl Grey tea with lots of sugar and milk for me, and warm milk for the kiddies. Dessert served on my prized ceramic dishes and mugs from Japan.
Kid-friendly, homemade, a cozy and eclectic style with leanings toward European and Asian.
20th May 2008 at 2:23 pm
My meal would be tiny sandwiches with delicious fillings, dainty cups of sweet tea, and cupcakes with sprinkles & sweet fluffy frosting.
20th May 2008 at 2:27 pm
Hmm, I’m have a seasonal fruit salad with King Island yoghurt in an op shop bowl type business I think.
20th May 2008 at 2:28 pm
Gluten-free honey joys on a vintage ‘cabbage’ plate, with a vanilla latte. mmmm.
20th May 2008 at 2:35 pm
Pink heart shaped peppermint marshmallows arranged in a circle on top of a huge flower shaped sugar cookie that has way too much blue food coloring in it. To drink, a tall Shirley Temple with a bendy straw and three cherries.
20th May 2008 at 2:36 pm
Oh fun!
Mine would be a great big communal feast with plenty of slow-roasted vegetables. Tasty and deep flavoured and very comforting.
Oh and bottomless really good red wine.
Damn. I’m hungry already.
20th May 2008 at 2:38 pm
A Caeser salad with homemade dressing and croutons, with some thick rustic bread to wipe up the extra dressing. Served in a big white bowl.
20th May 2008 at 2:40 pm
Mine would be a bowl of pasta topped with a rich traditional Italian bolognaise, so thick you have to twirl it through with a fork. Alongside that a glass of red. Best enjoyed sitting in front of a fire while it rains outside:)
20th May 2008 at 2:40 pm

20th May 2008 at 3:10 pm
My meal would be a colorful tossed salad with slices of warm steak on top. Glass of red wine on the side, and vanilla ice cream with berries for dessert.
20th May 2008 at 3:12 pm
What a great idea! Mine would be a piping hot cup of tea in a thrifted china cup & saucer, along side a fairy cake, all sugary and sweet. Yum. I think I have to make afternoon tea now….
20th May 2008 at 3:38 pm
Miso soup, cubes of white tofu and green wakame bobbing on the surface, served in a laquerware bowl. A small dish of seaweed salad on the side. Chopsticks.
A large slab of 85% bittersweet chocolate to follow.
On the table is a perfect autumn leaf, reddy-brown and crisp.
There is silence, punctuated by the sound of tram bells and the rumble of traffic on the busy city streets below.
20th May 2008 at 4:27 pm
Mine is a big Pink Fairy Floss stick along side a bag of Licorice Allsorts to chose from. Complimented of course with a icy cold drink of Creamy Soda.
So much sweetness! – and pink, there has to be pink!
Thank you for your great reviews of The Boss You.

On an afternoon where the clean crisp and cool spring air wafts gently through a window, over a pink and silver marbled table, lies a turquoise plate with fragrant cranberry lemon saffron couscous and a cup of fresh chai beside it. A calico cat sits on the chair, observing the scene, waiting for the opportunity to get into trouble…
20th May 2008 at 4:37 pm
My business would be a struggling vegetarian. She drinks plenty of water, eats lots of salad and low-carb protein bars. For dinner she’s having a lean cuisine, but she’ll wake up in the middle of the night and sneak into the kitchen to eat all the cooking chocolate.
Did I just give my business an eating disorder? It was just supposed to be a little eccentric! Most of my customers are female students anyway.
20th May 2008 at 4:48 pm
Picknicking on the porch, with autumn rain (i love rain) coming down and wind howling, eating freshly baked still warm bread, some lovely cheese and forest fruits. coconut biscuits for desert.
everyone being warmed by thick quilted blankets made out of fabrics with a history, and steaming hot mugs of tea.
20th May 2008 at 4:56 pm
My business ‘is’ a wholemeal pitta bread filled with freshly made falafels, salad, drizzled with tahini sauce and vegan garlic mayo, eaten at a festival with my friends, surrounded by colours and textures and music. That all reflects the bright and multicultural look of my glass, and the ethical philosophy of my life
20th May 2008 at 5:05 pm
Oooh, the pressure! Alrighty….my business would have to be an organic, fair-trade, wilderness protecting, wildlife preserving, recycled packaging, pesticide free, locally produced, all-round-earth-saving chocolate bar scoffed in the car while doing the school run.
Juggling everything, while still having a conscience!
20th May 2008 at 5:12 pm
My business would be a fresh spinach salad with lots of fun things on top like chopped almonds and apples and a little feta cheese. Some grilled chicken might be nice, too, and a slice of sour dough bread. Served with a tall glass of iced green tea.
20th May 2008 at 5:13 pm
Hmm, well, Violet & Rose is not a meal. It is morning tea. Or afternoon tea. It is homemade yo-yo’s and a sponge cake with passionfruit icing, filled with fresh whipped cream and strawberries. It’s cups of tea and freshly made lemonade. All served on a hand embroidered table cloth with old mismatched china. And a big vase of flowers cut from the garden on the table. And everyone is welcome, from Nanna to your best friend’s three year old child. Interesting exercise, thanks for that! Got me thinking …
20th May 2008 at 5:59 pm
Hot cheesy macaroni cheese, cooked in a vintage Pyrex dish and served to all my friends in vintage Pyrex ramekins on cushions on the floor in front of a good Jane Austen series. There may be hot chocolate for afters.
20th May 2008 at 6:02 pm
The meal that best reflects my business would be a multi-tiered bento box choc-full of yummy, bite-sized bits and pieces.
20th May 2008 at 6:16 pm
let’s see… if my business fred & george, were to be a meal it would be a picnic in the back yard. With retro sheets and pillowcases drying on the hills hoist, a light breeze blowing, the scent of roses & camelias drifting from the flowers beds, freshly mown grass. An old willow esky holdings bottles of pop, mismatched thrifted plates layed out over an old granny blanket on the grass, the plates are full of crisps & sandwich triangles, lemon cheesecake, devils on horseback & a pineapple with skewers of pickled onion, tasty cheese & kabana on them.
20th May 2008 at 6:27 pm
An Asian-style noodle bowl of good, hearty soup alongside a just-brown, buttered English muffin to dip in and Greek yoghurt with figs and honey to finish.
20th May 2008 at 6:39 pm
I’m entering on behalf of a dear friend who needs a copy of this book (if I don’t win, I’m going to order her one from Amazon).
Going on what I know about her business idea, the meal would be one of those three-tiered petit fours (sp?) plate, with little custard and strawberry bite-size tartlets on top, then profiteroles with rich dark chocolate and chantilyly cream on the middle plate, and the bottom plate would have a selection of three-layer sandwiches, cut into fingers with the crusts removed. Perfectly formed, delicious little bits and pieces with something for all tastes.
And there would be champagne in tall flutes to wash it all down with.
PS So glad to see you back again! You’ve been missed.
20th May 2008 at 6:56 pm
My business is a very simple yet melt-in-the-mouth flourless chocolate cake. A classic – made from traditional, quality ingredients (the best cooking chocolate available), yet served on an elegant serving platter to give it a contemporary edge. Made special by the addition of a mystery ingredient that sets it apart from all other chocolate cakes you’ll try. Anyone who tastes it raves about it to family and friends. Soon this cake/business becomes the stuff of legends. Ok, now I’m getting carried away – one can wish. (E-mail me if you want the recipe for this actual food.)
20th May 2008 at 6:57 pm
Mi business as a meal would be a cute lacquered bento box filled with delicious nibbles. Some yakitori, some escalibada, some fried calamari…. Umm, now I’m hungry.
20th May 2008 at 7:05 pm
Mine would definitely be a cream tea- plain scones, clotted cream and strawberry jam with a big pot of tea. Preferably from the amazing bakers I found in Dawlish, Devon last summer- or failing that i’d make it myself! But wherever it would be, and whoever made it there would be lots of cups of tea.
20th May 2008 at 7:19 pm
My business is eating Japanese fried chicken (karaage) with a Kirin beer. And edamame on the side.
20th May 2008 at 7:31 pm
It depends on the season – in the winter a good hearty soup (mushrooms, watercress, beef) with warm bread rolls and cheesecake for dessert. for the summer i would have and outdoor meal of sandwiches, fresh crisp salad and cider and pimms flowing all the day long!
I’m glad you are back on the net. You have been missed
20th May 2008 at 7:39 pm
How Lovely ![]()
Tiny little sandwiches with the crusts cut off. Lamingtons. Baby Quiches. Cupcakes. Pastries. Homemade Lemonade. Imported free-trade coffee. Earl Grey tea searved in my good china. Lavish table settings. Linen napkins and silver cutlery. Full tummies and a good game of scrabble.
Love UR Blog
20th May 2008 at 7:40 pm
Mine would be a nice warm evening BBQ with prawn skewers and calamari, fresh crusty bread and olive, capsicum, tomato and lettuce salad. Followed by berries and icecream. Slow cooked but nourishing and sunny!
20th May 2008 at 8:00 pm
Roast beef. Boiled new potatoes with butter. Creamed leeks. Solid, no nonsense food. Very satisfying.
20th May 2008 at 8:04 pm
My meal would be steamed fresh brocolini, capsicum, mushrooms and olives tossed through homemade spaghetti with the most delicous olive oil, fresh chilli and garlic with long shavings of parmasan and cracked pepper .. and a glass of very cold white wine!
20th May 2008 at 8:42 pm
Hmm, my products would have to reflect something daggy, recycled and loveable so food to match would be something pretty low brow really.
Maybe a strong coffee to get those higgledy pigiledy ideas flowing then a desperate but successful batch of re purposed mashed potato fritters w maybe spring onions, tinned tuna and cheese or what ever I had around that suited.
If I had to make something sweet it would be an whisked eggs sugar cream mix w bread dunked in and fried topped w butter fried banana, caramelized brown sugar cream, sort of caramel sauce…. W ice-cream.
As many ingredients from our garden. Cheap but decadent! YUM
20th May 2008 at 8:49 pm
Her meal would consist of dried fruit, nuts, cheese, twiggy sticks and salty biscuits all wrapped carefully in a gingham cloth, to be enjoyed atop a warm, flat rock situated a little too close to the side of the mountain she’s just ascended.
20th May 2008 at 8:56 pm
hello. i think my meal that encompasses what my business would be like is:
a pumpkin, pea and coconut milk curry
served in a little japanese style bowl with brown rice
with little bits sloshed over the sides
and a glass of milk.
earthy, sweet, messy, balanced.
thankyou for entertainihng me with your blog!
20th May 2008 at 9:11 pm
A plate of cutely decorated vegan cupcakes – maybe pistachio and rose water with pink icing – with a soy chai.
Not really a meal, but it would be yummy…
20th May 2008 at 9:12 pm
hi there,
ours would be a wild weed spanakopita (with wildcrafted greens, dandelion, nettle, violet, lambs quarter) made with local eggs and a local sheep feta. on the side we would have a mugwort pasta with nettle sauce and some chicken of the woods sauteed in butter, we’d be drinking elderflower champane. it would of course be a picnic in the woods.
20th May 2008 at 9:33 pm
My business idea as a meal would be a camp oven roast dinner, tender meat and potato, pumpkin and carrot infused with a delicious unique smoky flavour you just can’t get out of the oven. Good friends, gravy and apple cider complete the picture. Traditional yet with a twist!
20th May 2008 at 9:35 pm
How fun!
My (?imaginary/future?) business would eat gravlax sitting at a low picnic table overlooking the beach. With its hair blowing in the salty breeze. And a thermos of hot tea on the table.
I’ve read a few others’ comments, and am now off to read everyone’s! Fascinating.
20th May 2008 at 10:01 pm
Oh, I just checked this out of the library because of your recommendation!
My venture is a bowl of green garlic soup with a side of my husband’s fried potatoes. Warm cantaloupe for dessert.
20th May 2008 at 10:17 pm
Thick crusty toast topped with peanut butter + tall glass of warm milk.
20th May 2008 at 10:22 pm

20th May 2008 at 10:43 pm
hmmm
A flat white and a chocolate croissant – to go and to be consumed in an urban park.
20th May 2008 at 10:46 pm
I think mine would be afternoon (American) tea fare: Earl Grey, lemon scones, thick cream and dainty cakes. All made with organic ingredients. I would scour Etsy for modern but vintage inspired china.
20th May 2008 at 11:17 pm
hmmm. such a great idea. to get us all thinking. my business meal. something that leaves you satisfied. yet wanting to come back for more. it would definitely include a glass or two of good red wine. for the food. pasta. yes. a simple one. made to perfection. homemade tomato sauce. with some fresh basil.
20th May 2008 at 11:25 pm
I’m still in the process of creating my business, but I think the perfect meal for it would be a lemon-poppyseed muffin served on a very simple white plate and a latte in a ceramic cup made to look like the paper throw-away kind. Sweet, simple, and a little kooky.
20th May 2008 at 11:34 pm
Mine would be a baby greens salad with grilled chicken and strawberries and sliced toasted almonds and orange sections with a light lemony vinaigrette with a side of homemade whole grain bread with melted swiss and avocado, with a glass of chilled sweet pinot grigio on the side or ice cold water if the weather is really hot.
20th May 2008 at 11:39 pm
Despite the name of my business, funcupcake, i think a tall dessert glass of lemon sorbet with a nice shot of limoncello would be perfect! Tart, Sweet, Refreshing, and without unnecessary stuffiness. Fun and Summer-like!
20th May 2008 at 11:40 pm
Mmmm so many options….Decadent
Fetta, semi dried tomatos and basil topping on a crusty pizza base…complimented with a glass of pinot..and side dishes of olives, dips and more crusty bread to go round! All on picnic blanket over looking the sea…..
21st May 2008 at 12:16 am
My lunch would be a large crusty bagel, butter on one side/cream cheese on the other. A thick slice of sharp cheddar cheese. A bowl of strawberries, halved, with whipped cream on top. A tall glass of icy lemon Italian soda. My feet tucked under my rather large dog who sleeps under the table to clean up any crumbs.
21st May 2008 at 12:22 am
A banh mi sandwich and salty lemonade.
21st May 2008 at 12:24 am
garden fresh salad with sprouts and a grilled turkey burger with sweet potato fries. and cranberry juice.
21st May 2008 at 12:33 am
My business is sweet and imperfect so I’d say she would be perched on a porch swing on a warm summer day eating a quickly melting orange sherbert push-up recently purchased from an ice-cream truck.
21st May 2008 at 12:35 am
A bowl of porridge with cinnamon and brown sugar. Not very exciting but it makes you feel warm and content.
21st May 2008 at 12:40 am
Mine would be a slice of decadently rich flourless french chocolate cake topped with fresh rasberries and whipped cream served on a traditional blue and white plate from Japan. To accompany, a cup of hibiscus tea and organic honey served in a Japanese blue and white teacup (but with a different pattern as the Japanese are want to do).
21st May 2008 at 12:41 am
On a beautiful, rustic farm table laid with a mix of vintage linens and colourful china (and warmed by the glow of fairy lights and candles), you’d find a plump little chicken, roasted with lemons and rosemary, surrounded by potatoes Dauphinois and roasted asparagus. A lovely bottle (or two) of Beaujolais Nouveau is ready to be drunk in green-footed wine glasses, and the late-spring chill means that there’s a fire crackling behind the grate.
Pudding is a toss-up: will it be Nana’s lemon bars or that chocolate cake you blogged about last week? There’s a velvety Port for the grown-ups and milky-sweet rooibos tea for the wee ones, and a round of Candyland in front of the fire for everyone afterwards.
Thanks, Claire…this was so fun it got me to de-lurk! =)
21st May 2008 at 12:42 am
Tofu and vegetables lightly stir-fried with lots of chill, garlic and ginger
21st May 2008 at 12:50 am
My business likes to eat fresh, ripe, multicolored fruit; a variety of crusty breads with butter; salty cheeses and cured meats; and pickled things off mismatched china. It uses Liberty of London napkins and drinks kir royales lakeside. This, when it is at its most dainty. It should be noted, however, that it is not afraid to get sloppy with barbecued ribs, greasy eggrolls, and Jack & Diet Cokes when certain life events and primal moods dictate this course of action.
21st May 2008 at 12:51 am
Mine would be a business lunch with a really really good old friend! We would be laughing so hard over a yummy caesar salad and a glass of bubbles!

A warm apple tart with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, and a cup of tea.
21st May 2008 at 2:39 am
Oh, this is so fun! I love reading everyone’s meals!
Mine would be a delicately spicy Thai red curry, with lots of fresh vegetables and tender chicken, served over brown rice with fresh cilantro garnish, in a simple, heavy white ironstone shallow bowl. Dessert is fresh strawberries with lavendar gelato, served in an tiny, old blue & white transferware dish.
21st May 2008 at 2:54 am
Mine would be baked potatoes cut in wedges, seasoned with garlic salt, basil and a big bowl of salad with pumpkin oil dressing and hard boiled eggs. And brownies for a dessert.
I am so glad you are back to posting as I love everything about your blog. You are an inspiration.
21st May 2008 at 3:26 am
my would be a great strudel with nuts, and a kennel of vanilla icecream on top. i wont forget the cinnamon. i have to say that i would eat it in my garden on my beautiful green grass. im from argentina! kisses
21st May 2008 at 3:30 am
I think mine maybe be the same as yours, but I picture homemade scones (my favorite!) blackberry, of course. Mocha colored tea (milk and sugar) in a hand thrown mug (naturally we’d be selling my husband’s pottery). Comfy chairs next to a fire or outside on a nice day near garden with plenty of lavender and rosemary. People crafting and chatting all around..
21st May 2008 at 3:34 am
I think mine would have to be a vanilla cupcake with light pink frosting, topped with a fresh edible flower, served on a footed cake plate. Strawberries on the side and a tall glass of fresh squeezed lemonade.
21st May 2008 at 3:42 am
Sushi, lost of different kinds. And a refreshing glass of iced mint tea.
21st May 2008 at 4:03 am
A sunny day, sitting in the garden listening to birds chirping, a fresh scent of flowers in the light breeze. Eating a bowl of greek yoghurt with strawberries, pistachio nuts and a drizzle of honey.
21st May 2008 at 4:17 am
My idea would be a hot cup of cocoa and minature marshmellows. A peppermint stick to stir with, in a vintage aqua fire king mug on an embroidered napkin holding a devils food cupcake and cream cheese frosting.
21st May 2008 at 5:20 am
It would definitely be a vegetarian meal! I suppose it would also be a little sweet, a little salty. So perhaps a colorful tofu and veggie stir fry with a side of decadent chocolate cake, topped with three red raspberries.
21st May 2008 at 5:36 am
Vanilla cupcake with buttercream frosting tinted pink. And a tall glass of milk.
Yum!
21st May 2008 at 6:01 am
I have been oogooling of that book – would love to win. Mine meal would be creative and of course include coffee. It would be a presentation of color on contrasting dishes/serving pieces with fabric linens that are unexpected. Casual or elegant depending on mood. It would concluded with much good conversation and coffee.
21st May 2008 at 7:21 am
Oh how fun! Mine would have to be an iced cold glass of lemonade garnished with a strawberry while relaxing under an umbrella in the garden .. the sun is shining bright and every once in a while a gentle breeze comes along. Of course there’s a riot of colors to the left in the flower beds.
21st May 2008 at 7:22 am
buttered noodles with parmesan cheese and a tart tart lemon tart for dessert. the noodles are the traditional comfortable part, and the lemon tart is the tangy unexpected modernist twist. yummy.
glad to see loobylu back!
21st May 2008 at 7:49 am
Mine would be fresh, beautifully rolled, simply arranged sushi on a white plate with a cold glass of beer on the side.
21st May 2008 at 8:01 am
A tuna melt — a really good one where the tuna’s dressed with plenty of mustard and lemon and capers, and the bread is thick and grainy, and the cheese is a fragrant Gruyere, and you have to eat the whole thing with a knife and fork. And a thick coffee milkshake, not too sweet.
21st May 2008 at 8:02 am
My business- would be desert. More like a buffet of cupcakes. Cute, small, delicious cakes decorated differently but with the same appeal. With a good cup of black tea with a little milk and sugar.
21st May 2008 at 8:02 am
A homemade pizza with crispy edges, a chewy centre, rich red tomato sauce with a mix of herbs, slightly (not overly) spicy salami, carefully diced onions and halved green olives with pimiento – and no cheese, because I hate the stuff and it’s my business!
Served in big slices, no plates, with a glass of a specific Aussie pinot noir that comes with good memories.
21st May 2008 at 8:09 am
I love eating food, so this is a wonderful question to link with the personality of my future business…
A tea party hosted by Marie Antoinette with a tropical twist:
The backdrop is an island paradise with lots of frangipani flowers decorating the table setting and palm trees in the surrounds. There are many small chocolates and cupcakes with intricate, colourful icing designs in mountaineous piles. Scones with cream and jam – orange, lemon/lime, strawberry and cherry flavoured. There are old fashioned pots of tea – earl grey, peppermint. Pitchers of orange/mango juice mixed with cordial flavoured ice cubes shaped in stars. Baskets of passionfruit and bananas also litter the table setting.
The table setting reflects my future business – delicate, detailed, colourful and varied in product offerings. With a hint of elegance and the simple pleasures of island life.

My business would be a decadent chocolate lava cake served on a beautiful vintage white plate, accompanied by a beautiful port wine.
21st May 2008 at 8:30 am
a beach picnic on a warm day…on a big, old blanket…a cooler full of cold water, strawberry lemonade, and maybe a few beers. some cut-up watermelon, chips and salsa and guacamole, dried apricots, and pieces of fried chicken in case you get really hungry out there, and some ice cream sandwiches for desert.
21st May 2008 at 8:37 am
oh lordy…
Well, first we’ll have to catch and pluck and cook the chicken – something quite horrid and time consuming and messy to boot.
Then once we have put the chicken to roast in the oven with carrots saved from the rabbits and onions hidden from the raccoons, we would start on grinding the corn for the tortilla chips. This takes all moring of course but there are three sisters in my business and they have lots of time. After sister #1 stops playing with the cats she gets to work on mixing the corn flour with some sunflower oil (homemade of course) sea salt and a squeeze of lime we had in the fridge. Sister #2 steps on the cats tail as she takes the sun tea outside to brew, comforts the cats and helps to pick …Sister #3 and I work on the salsa – check on the roasted chicken and get all the children to start grading giant piles of cheese – three different kinds. There seems to be all kinds of noise from the garden as someone left the chicken gate open and they precede to help themselves to anything they can reach.
Final assembly after peace is restored – cheese is melted in my mothers copper pot. Jalepenos and tomatos are chopped – cilantro and onion – all on the side put in old wooden bowls placed on the table. Chicken is sliced and much thanks given for our bounty. The children all say “Grace – Blessings on our lunch please do start” all at the same time with sincere thanks. Chips are fried and drained and the Nacho fiest begins.
I have a huge vintage paper/textile/clothing business that seems to have a whole life of its own – all out of my garage and basement, so this was a very pleasant excersize

Mine would be an international comfort food buffet without the fluorescent overhead lighting or clear splashguards covering the food area. Curry, sushi, crepes, calzones and more cooked lovingly by grannies around the world who tell you you’re way to skinny and you should have more dessert!
21st May 2008 at 8:54 am
How about spicy tea and sticky rice wrapped in a banana leaf…
21st May 2008 at 8:59 am
i’ve always loved the idea of getting a burrito with your choice of toppings from a push cart…(starting simple, but customizing according to ind. tastes) so black bean or pinto bean burrito with any topping you want including guacamole, fresh salsa (green and red), pico de gallo, cheese, sour cream, shredded lettuce, rice, chopped tomatoes….i think that would do. OH! and a lime slushie to go with it.
21st May 2008 at 9:02 am
My meal would consist of a homemade buttermilk biscuit, a vegetarian sausage patty, and a side of tofu scramble. Something classic and familiar, but with a modern twist.
21st May 2008 at 9:42 am
Warm crusty olive bread with generous dollops of babaganoush and hummus followed by an entire packet of double coated chocolate tim-tams slurped through yesterdays coffee. Obviously my business lacks a little discipline …
21st May 2008 at 9:48 am
My “business-to-be” meal would be a cup of hot cocoa with whip cream and a dash of chili powder. Warm and comforting with a little bit of the unexpected mixed in.
21st May 2008 at 9:54 am
A hot and sour prawn tomyum with fluffy white long grain rice to sooth.
21st May 2008 at 9:54 am
Hmmm, I think mine would be a portuguese custard tart with a double strength latte, served on mid-century modern ceramics. This would be perfect for that early morning gazing out the window, catching ideas and jotting them down in made-by-me covered notebook while wearing made-by-me 60s inspired with minimalist twist clothing.
Hey, this is fun! I’ve just told my sister what my ideal life would be and it’s 3 days academic and 2 days artisan. That’s a very distracting thought while I’m at work (which is neither of those things!)
21st May 2008 at 10:17 am
The business I would like to create would be a tea party, with overgrown green apples, the darkest of chocolate, slices of chilli, glasses of sauvignon blanc and big cast iron teapots full of tea to warm your hands on. All odd looking toys would be invited and licking your plate would be allowed.
xx
21st May 2008 at 10:24 am
Mine would be homemade orange & date cake with a mango slushie (summer) or chai (winter): Something that isn’t necessary, but is a comforting indulgence (although not too decadent), fresh, and makes you feel good.
21st May 2008 at 10:31 am
My business would be a lazy summer afternoon picnic with loads of yummy food (like roast vegie salad, marinated olives, dolmades, pumpkin and fetta tart, grilled chicken kebabs, houmous and pitta bread, baklava, summer pudding, watermelon, chocolate truffles and lemon, lime and bitters all packed into an array of gorgeous vintage tins, tiffins etc and consumed on a huge turkish rug piled with comfy cushions. Ohhhhhh…..
21st May 2008 at 10:49 am
My business would be a grilled cheese sandwich with sliced tomatoes and a bowl of berries – preferably blackberries and strawberries!
Now I’m hungry.
21st May 2008 at 10:54 am
Phew! After reading all of the above, I am so hungry!
Mine is a beautiful parfait, stacked with the plumpest, sweetest cut strawberries and homemade vanilla ice-cream, topped with hand-whipped cream and nuts. A long antique spoon and a jaunty sense of Norman Rockwell type fun. The sound of kids laughing somewhere close by.
Right, I’ll just go make all that…..:)
21st May 2008 at 11:06 am
Hmmmm.
Apple pie a la mode.
At a corner diner with shiny red vinyl stools and blue-aproned waitresses.
Cheap coffee in a plain white mug.
Crossword puzzle from the newspaper.
21st May 2008 at 11:09 am
This is such a good question! I am torn since the name I have finally chosen for myself is “radish cake”. Kind of a sweet-hot little bite!
(I could also be a black tea with lots of milk and honey next to a bowl of creamy oatmeal. I’m not sure what I would call myself then!)
21st May 2008 at 11:20 am
Finnish rye bread with lots of butter and thick slices of cheddar cheese accompanied by a glass of cold milk all set out on a handmade checkered placemat with matching coaster
21st May 2008 at 11:50 am
My meal would all be bitesized bits that would fit on a small plate with cups composing an ecletic mix of dishware; thin porcelains, chunky handthrown clayware, and retro brights with dots and squiggles… a sampling of sweet macaroons and herbed savories that would typically grace a tea party.
21st May 2008 at 12:14 pm
My meal..would be my favorite…a turkey dinner with delicious stuffing made with a mixture of whatever I have on hand, served with delicious gravy…..mashed potatoes and some veggies. This is an all day meal which I love to prepare and take great pride in making. It’s fun, it’s happy and it tastes delicious! Have I mentioned it’s delicious??????
21st May 2008 at 12:30 pm
What a great idea.
My business is a white chocolate cupcake, with raspberries and a creamy pink icing, served on a cute pink floral plate, with a hot cup of milk tea. Honey on the side, and a big smile!
21st May 2008 at 12:39 pm
My business is a BLT (the perfect mix) with a fairtrade flat white. With a selection of tiny pieces of delicious cakes as a chaser. All served on themed but not matching crockery. And cloth napkins.
21st May 2008 at 12:40 pm
okay let me think…..
something simple yet pretty….
an element of kawaii…..
and something that makes you smile……
I’ve got it!
Imagine a crisp blue linen table cloth. On that table cloth is a tray . White with some little objects along the bottom, why they seem to be mushrooms. Pink with white spots and if I’m not mistaken they have little faces on them. Upon that tray is a teacup, in a saucer of course. There’s a little chip out the teacup but that does not matter. It holds sentimental value. The tea is just english breakfast, no lemon or peppermint here just simple tea. Next to that teacup is a small plate, the plate is blue, pale sky blue and it has white dots on it. On the plate is obviously a slice of toast smothered with vegemite. What was that? You expected a scone with jam, well you obviously just don’t know me well enough!
21st May 2008 at 12:52 pm
My business-as-a-meal would definitely be made from home-grown produce. An earthenware tagine of cous cous, tomato (a heritage variety from my garden maybe a green zebra!) and chicken spiced with cloves, cinnamon, cumin and pepper, topped with mint and coriander also from the garden. It is a simple meal, easy to prepare but interesting fresh flavours make it just delicious.
21st May 2008 at 12:55 pm
Mine’s a backyard barbeque where all the neighbors, friends, and family are invited. There are delicious burgers, veggie burgers, grilled chicken, tomato cucumber salad, and whatever potluck dishes our friends bring. Fruit salad and smoothies-to-order are for dessert!
There are white lights strung around our patio… the ones with tiny paper lanterns over some of the lights.
Accessible, casual, but with flare.

Bare feet in the grass, teddy bear’s picnic. Fruit, cheese and fresh baked bread. Good locally grown coffee and outstanding company!
